There are many factors that can influence how much someone gets paid in the United States, including their level of education, experience, and the industry they work in. That being said, some professions tend to have higher median salaries than others. According to data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the following professions had some of the highest median annual wages in 2020:
- Anesthesiologists: $267,020
- Surgeons: $255,110
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons: $242,740
- Obstetricians and Gynecologists: $235,240
- Orthodontists: $229,380
- Psychiatrists: $220,380
- Family and General Practitioners: $209,660
- Dentists, All Other Specialists: $208,000
- Physicians and Surgeons, All Other: $197,700
- Chief Executives: $200,140
It's worth noting that these figures represent median annual wages, which means that half of workers in these occupations earned more than these amounts and half earned less. In addition, wages can vary widely within a given occupation depending on a variety of factors such as location, employer, and individual experience and qualifications.
