Kathmandu Valley to Become Nepal’s First Wire-Free Space

Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli inaugurated the much-needed work of installing an underground electric wires project in the Maharajgunj, Kathmandu on Monday(17th Feb 2020 ). In the beginning stage, the project will begin in Maharajgunj & Ratnapark areas and will be extended to other areas later on, according to the plan. The project, instated by Nepal Electricity Authority(NEA) under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, is one of the most important projects of the government and it must be appreciated for this.

The work is being initiated by the Indian contractor company AEI Industries, they started the work after receiving funds within the deadlines. Now The AEI Industries is to set the transmission line of 11 kV for nearly 400 km and of 400 volts for about 350 km in the area.

The government will initiate wiring works for Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, and Lalitpur in the first phase of the project.

The electricity wires will be laid underground and are to stretch every house. According to the Nepal Electrical Authority (NEA), the work will be executed in three phases. The NEA had earlier planned to substitute all the open wires with optical fibers.

As being concern over electric pole wire, roughly looking cables have not only caused the Kathmandu Valley view unpleasant but also has become a significant problem of frequent short-term circuits. When the storm and lightning strike, Kathmandu goes dark or power supply is obstructed for hours. Moreover, with naked wires running over the ground, the chances of accidents and casualties are also high. Most cities in the world have placed the electric wires underground precisely to avoid such accidents.

Nepal Electrical Authority (NEA) Managing Director Kulman Ghising has the track record of effective management of the project, it can be anticipated that the project will be completed within the designated deadline.
